City Release: Proposed Data Center
La Pine Statement on Proposed Data Center :
The following is an inventory of what has been before the La Pine City Council regarding the ongoing discussion of Data Center installation in La Pine as of May 2, 2026.
The SLED (Sunriver La Pine Economic Development Board), an independent advisory group, first approached the City with an inquiry regarding the development of a Data Center earlier in 2026. This board, upon consideration of the proposal, made a recommendation to the La Pine City Council to consider the proposal on the part of an independent third party who is interested in Data Center development.
The Third Party, Boxminer.io, made a presentation for a closed loop (no water supply, no wastewater effluent producing) Data Center system to the La Pine City Council on 03.11.26 at the Regular Council Meeting which was advertised on the agenda.
Following this meeting, the Council took no formal action and indicated the need for further information.
At the 03.25.26 Regular Council Meeting, the matter was placed on the agenda and was further considered. The Council determined by way of a non-binding vote to direct City Staff to move forward with the process of a potential land sale, which directed further due diligence in ensuring that this project would meet the City’s requirements and concerns regarding the installation of a Data Center. This did not constitute a final determination and has not resulted in any land being sold to date. It is of note that Deschutes County would also be required to sign off on a final land sale as it is the County’s land in question, and following any land sale, a Data Center developer would be required to go through land use review (City) and building review (County) before the construction of any facility.
As of the date of this message, no land sales, or projects regarding Data Centers under the jurisdiction of the City or County have been approved within the City limits of La Pine, and the City continues to seek further information to understand all elements of the proposal. The City is neither in support nor against the proposal and only seeks to provide adequate consideration based on factual information that has been collected under its own efforts.
